  • BETA v1.4.20+

I guess I'm in the 'lucky' 10% of beta testers who are able to update to the new v1.4.20 (Play Store only). Per Liana-Daniela (QA Specialist) on Discord, they are only rolling out the update to 10% of testers, in order to limit the damage if there are serious bugs, then they will progressively increase the beta participation up to 100% once the patch is deemed stable enough. [Update: beta is now rolled out to 100% of testers (still Android-only, of course.)]

I've looked around and can't find any official info on how, exactly, we testers report bugs and give other feedback, other than the 'private feedback for developer' link in the Play Store. Communication between testers is crucial for this beta to be successful. Can we get a dedicated forum on here?

[For those thinking about updating, please read this important thread by Nhat. There is a better than zero chance of something going horribly wrong in beta, so please consider the risks before joining. You can always wait a bit and join after the worst bugs have been squashed.]

If you're here because you've encountered strange or bugged behavior in the beta, please check out Nhat's summary thread to see if it's already been reported. If it hasn't, feel free to add your findings there or in this thread, and he will be periodically compiling the reports into the first few posts. Thanks!

Is there a changelog posted anywhere about this Beta?
I'm assuming that the Dev was wrong.

Not that I've seen. Are you able to update to it?

[Forgot to add, when I installed the patch, I did get a helpful in-game mail with release notes for 1.4.11, announcing the new 'Season', lol.]

I hope I'm not the only 10%-er who uses these forums. Might've been good to include everyone who is both in beta AND is a forum member in the initial 10% group.

Since I haven't received any guidance, I'm just going to kind of journal my impressions of the beta, and note 'bugs' as I go along.

OK, we're off to a rough start.

Some background: pre-beta, I'd accepted my Daily Quests, and was farming gems from ads. Wanted more gold, so popped a booster and was running Morgenheim. I'd gotten about half my ad quota when I updated to beta.

Now, for those not able to see what's in this update, I need to explain some things. The beta seems to be focused on changes made for the benefit of absolute noobs. That's fine, but the game now has 'quests' for virtually every level of Story mode, starting in Act 1, Map 1. The interface takes you firmly by the hand and pretty much doesn't let go. It insists on steering you through the story, performing basic level-running for a few small rewards, suitable for beginners.

That's the problem for me: I'm not a noob, but I can't turn off the tutorial quests, which constantly spam for attention if you try to ignore them and do your own thing. Trying to gold-run Morg and the Story resets to Act 1 after leaving Home Town (now called 'Oldinn'), so there's a bunch of extra steps you can't avoid. I persevered until my booster expired, then tried to follow the noob quests, like a good soldier. I tried, but after several of these forced tutorials, where the big reward is an uncommon ring or boots (like I need more crap for my hoarder stash!), I had to come here to vent.

            Random things:

            - Your hero can now 'interact' with certain objects in the environment. Haven't found anything interesting, yet, but maybe that's planned. You can shake trees and crates, for example. But this new 'interactivity' has some negative consequences: some of these objects can block your movement.

            - Speaking of movement, certain 'targets' you click on, such as the Stash, or the Portal, now cause your hero to walk towards them, rather than simply opening or changing scene if you click them while they're in view. It always bugged me when this would happen before, like tapping the Salvage table wouldn't open Salvage, but instead my hero would run over and crawl under the table. Now, this irritating behavior is standard, but at least the target opens automatically after the hero runs to it.

The above two points lead me to my first bug. To reproduce:

In HT/Oldinn, tap Stash. Hero runs to Stash and it opens. Close Stash. Without moving, tap the Salvage table. Hero runs toward Salvage, but the Dressing Room is right there, and is one of those objects you can bump into. Hero runs behind DR and gets stuck, bumping repeatedly. You have to tap and guide the toon around it to the table. Had similar issues with some story maps, including some crates in Morg that thought I wanted to play with them instead of running full speed through the level.

Bug #2: can't collect daily quests. After doing all the work required for my dailies, I went to collect the reward gems, but the flashing ?s were gone. Hoping this is a one-time glitch due to installing the update after accepting quests in previous version. Bottom line: I'm out 100 gems for the day, and out of time to play, too.

Orion posted some issues in Discord - I don't have access to the beta update at the moment.

I love the game, and I'm willing to volunteer some of my limited RL time to help make it better. Previous betas gave players a sneak preview of coming changes, while letting them continue to pursue their in-game goals. This one is different; the new code and design -- which absolutely needs to be tested -- is focused almost exclusively on beginning players. This beta offers me nothing in compensation for spending my limited time doing tasks which don't advance my characters, requires precious storage space for what appears to be junk trinkets with Special Names (I have no clue if these'll be worth something at some later point in the game), robs me of hard-earned gems, and just makes everything I normally do harder and more aggravating.

I feel it's imperative that the devs add a setting to turn off the noob quest stuff, so that non-noobs will be willing to test this. Or better, only show the tutorials if the account is brand new. My fear is that the plan is to make this the new character experience for everyone in the next ANB. If experienced players can't disable it, it will ruin ANB, arguably the best current feature of the game. For the sake of having a useful beta test, offer some rewards for spending time testing things that have zero appeal to established players. Bounties for bugs, increased drop rates... something. One basic thing: provide a free character slot, since all the new stuff revolves around starting a hero from scratch.

Interesting, Nhat . I so wish you were able to see it; I'd love to read your impressions. Hopefully, it will be soon.

I'm honestly surprised and a bit baffled that these changes are what's been occupying the devs' time lately. Maybe, with some tweaking, it will turn out to be a smart move...

That is why the beta would have been perfect for me. I spend most of my time wasting RL time running down rabbit holes checking out the stupidest things.

There is the one, simplest question that I am looking to have answered. Does the new version require a profile update so that you are unable to play the same characters once again on v1.4.16?

Yes, Tin Man , you will be trapped here, in Betaville. I'm looking forward to you & Nhat and the other rabbit hole spelunkers being able to see and discuss this strange new world...

There are definitely some interesting ideas here, some graphics improvements, and the environmental interactivity I mentioned above has potential -- I just shook a crate in the Descent, and out popped a healing apple! Also, as I keep running the quests, the rewards are getting a bit better. The whole thing is kind of a hot mess, but not as bad as my initial impressions above.

I will give it a fresh look tomorrow, after some sleep.

Have you hit the barrel in Marcus' Village yet?

Maybe this is a beta version customized just for you? It is a nuisance after all isn't it?

Thanks for the warning about the one-way trip. I will be properly prepared before diving in.

ARGH - I updated to 1.4.20 ... and was doing a few of the newb quests (on a lvl 70 character who's finished all 4 worlds on all Legendary difficulty) ...

... and now I noticed that my gold, instead of the expected 1.8M is a Very Large Negative Number. (And no, I wasn't trying to hack it.)

(edit) Ok, on further inspection, the new number is negative 1,689,112,543 gold... so what happened to the sign of my gold??

Hold on..my Season Pass was also deactivated/deleted, and ... I thought it had 7 or 8 days left.

And I was expecting an 8M (roughly) gold payout and a 6k (ish?) gem payout.

I fail to understand the logic in a partial Beta release. If you need to do that, then establish an Alpha group. And quite frankly Beta accounts should never carry over onto the mainstream releases anyway.
