Well it's that time of year again. I started playing this game around eight years ago. I think it was still called Mage and Minions back then, I can't remember. The Adventurer set was only epic, not legendary. Trials didn't provide XP...you ran the beginning of Canyon of Whispers thousands of times to slowly accumulate XP (the original CoW, not the new map). You regularly farmed trial 205 with hopes to get a legendary item with at least three usable stats as crafting then was useless. You ran The Broken Dragon thousands of times to get more gemstones for jewelry crafting as there was no such thing as jewelry boxes. Crafting jewelry was so complex to anyone unfamiliar with the game that Nhat made a spreadsheet to guide players through the process, except I'm so thick that I think Coda made a video explaining how to use the spreadsheet lol. There were no XP or currency boosters. Once Champion points were introduced I don't think there was a cap on any of the damage stats; someone may have to correct my memory. There was no Hometown, no trinkets, no stash space, no events (but there was the Dyoma score). I wonder if any of the original players ever peek in from time to time or if they've moved on entirely?
I think what makes this game so continually playable is that it is an almost perfect balance of complexity and speed. It is complex enough to remain stimulating but gameplay is fast and fluid enough to avoid boredom. It's also completely playable for free (just takes longer) but the daily gems and seasonal reward gems are deals that can't be beat. I'm maybe not as consumed by this game as I was eight years ago but it still has me playing almost daily even if only casually for a few minutes. Glad it's still around
