Frost bolt and northern wind

Hi all,

Under the description for frost bolt is says while equipped frost nova has a a 100% to trigger northern wind, which would count all targets viewed as frozen, correct? I underlined equipped because I thought frost bolt needs to fired in that process, but does it? or can it be simply enabled as a secondary weapon and still trigger northern wind?

It just needs to be equipped, you can use AL the whole time and never fire frosbolt and still get the benefit of northern wind.
