We cannot even open the game to play offline which is extremely important to us when our WiFi goes down and we have to wait days for our cable company to fix, or come out to fix....the game gets stuck on "connecting to server to check for updates" or some-such and never opens.......HIGHLY disappointing.

Which platform are you playing on? Seem to recall people posted about that error on Windows, but I believe those were with internet connection. I've only played on Android mobile, and never had any issues playing offline.

Have you ensure that the full game data have been downloaded first? ie. Start the game and start Story Map 1 "The Shores of Hope" and wait for the data load to finish?

If this your first time starting the game, you'll see this - please wait to ensure everything is downloaded correctly, only click Start once it's done.
