Why do mercenaries have a level cap? If they could keep gaining levels (like monsters can have higher levels in trials) it would keep them from becoming irrelevant in higher difficulties, especially from a survivability standpoint. It would also give a reason to acquire mercs early/give an advantage to the ones you find vs. ones you buy.
Also, have you thought of adding ways to upgrade the mercs? They are woefully underpowered, and once acquired are rarely even looked at, so having something else to do with them would be fun.
