Welcome!
The mage has three major builds that most users play, but there is little crossover between them because of their particular gear set attributes. Nevertheless, any of the three builds discussed below are worth developing since you can keep any of them as a Main or as a Farmer during non-ANB times.
The ARCANIST build is a very decent build for those new to mage. bojck not long ago created a most excellent topic with Arcanist build particulars that you may be interested in:

The STORMCALLER REGALIA (aka “ZAP”) has become one of the most popular and fun builds, and is currently one of the top metas, particularly for those who only play on mobile. Again, it requires its specific gear set, weapons, attacks, abilities, and passives for optimization, but it is one build that allow for a rather straightforward playing style (akin to the Warrior Fury set). It does require a bit of practice to coordinate a few of its abilities to get the best damage results during gameplay and higher trials, but its primary damage from Arc Lightning make it a powerful "one-shot type" of play.
Finally, the ELEMENTAL LORD REGALIA (ELR) gear coupled with the GRAND MAGISTER'S COMMAND (GMC) weapons set is also one of the most popular builds and often found competing in the Leaderboards. But it is challenging for a new player, since it does involve getting a lot of gear and weapon synergies working together with your gameplay, as well as selecting the right Attack, Ability, and Passive attributes to be optimized with the ELR gears and GMC weapons. Fire and Frost Support ability are the main types of damages with this build, so you need to optimize everything to get the maxium benefit of damage during your gameplay. Plus it does take a bit of practice to coordinate timing to proc the Vial of the Wind Spirit and Talisman of Storms trinkets (a must for this build), as well as to learn about and how and when to use the very important “thermal shock” and “shatter” effects.
So, if you begin a mage build, you can also review the different build sets used by the top players when looking at the Season Leaderboards (which just started). But it’s your choice, of course, to pick a build -- based on your style -- that you’ll LIKE to play!
