Current situation (bug):

All my spiritstones are gone after the introduction of the new type of spiritstone. I had 6 Lethalade spiritstones embedded in gear, and had around 5-10 of each type in my stash. Once the new type was introduced yesterday, i found only one Lethalade lvl 6 in my stash, and everything else was gone.

Spiritstones are Seasonal - at the end of each season, ALL Spiritstones you collected are converted to Essences (Spiritstones removed, Essences sent via mail). You shouldn't even have that one in your stash...

Each new season, everyone starts farming for Spiritstones all over again.

They are related somehow to chests that you pay for the privilege of diligently working to achieve only to have them disappear on you.

Only Seasonally related, actually.

Spiritstones are designed to go poof at the end of a Season, after which the rotation starts anew and you scramble again to build up your arsenal.

Don't fall too much in love with any one kind...there will be Seasons in which it will not be available!
